About Topsoil Calculator

Topsoil Calculator is a free set of landscaping estimators for gardeners, landscapers and contractors. Every calculator on this site converts measurements into cubic yards, cubic metres, bag counts and weight, and every one of them is free to use with no sign-up. Nothing on this site collects a delivery quote or connects you to a supplier. The tools exist to help you work out how much material a project needs before you go and get a quote for it elsewhere.

Each calculator uses a published bulk density figure for the material it covers rather than a live pricing feed or a per-region average. Topsoil, for example, is calculated at 2,410 lb/yd³ throughout this site, and every other material, including fill dirt, compost, sandy loam, potting soil, and the additional materials used on individual tool pages, has its own fixed density figure used consistently everywhere that material appears. These are estimates for planning a project, not a substitute for a supplier's own delivery ticket, which will reflect the specific moisture content and compaction of the load you actually receive.

Density Figures and Sources

The density figures used across every calculator on this site are industry-standard bulk material figures, the same general figures landscaping suppliers, extension services and contractors use for planning, not measurements taken from a specific quarry, farm or supplier. They are kept consistent across every calculator that uses a given material, so a cubic yard of topsoil weighs the same whether it's calculated on the homepage, the raised bed calculator, or the weight converter.

Actual delivered material can and does vary from these figures by region, by supplier, and by how wet or compacted a particular load happens to be, the same variables covered in detail on the soil weight calculator. Treat every result on this site as a planning estimate to order against, and confirm the exact weight of a large or expensive order against the supplier's own scale ticket rather than this site's figures alone.
