About Topsoil Calculator
Topsoil Calculator is a small, focused site with one purpose: help gardeners, landscapers, and homeowners order the right amount of soil without guesswork. Every tool on the site is free, runs in your browser, and updates the result as you type. There are no sign-ups, no trackers, and no ads.
The calculators use industry-standard soil densities: 2,410 lb/yd³ for topsoil, 2,000 lb/yd³ for fill dirt, 1,000 lb/yd³ for compost, and so on. Weight figures account for dry, compacted, and wet states because moisture content can shift soil weight by 30% or more. Bag counts use the bag sizes most often sold at retail (0.75 cu ft for topsoil, 2 cu ft for mulch) and round up to whole bags.
The site covers 8 calculators in total:
- Topsoil calculator, the main tool, on the homepage.
- Raised bed soil calculator, to fill one bed or many at once.
- Lawn top dressing calculator, to level and feed an existing lawn.
- Fill dirt calculator, for site grading and retaining walls.
- Soil weight calculator, to convert cubic yards to tons.
- Sod prep calculator, to get the soil right before laying sod.
- Compost & amendment calculator, for compost by volume and lime by weight.
- Mulch calculator, for coverage by depth on any bed.
Every figure on the site traces back to a named source rather than a guess. Topsoil, fill dirt, and mulch densities come from published landscaping and construction material references; compaction and moisture multipliers reflect typical ranges reported by soil testing labs and extension services. Pages get reviewed and refreshed as material prices and standard practices change, most recently in 2025.
